Axe Sail

Founded in 2014 by Axel Gadbin, Axe Sail is a multi-service marine hub dedicated to demanding sailors. The original site is located at Port Chantereyne in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, alongside further sites in Granville and Saint-Malo. The company sets out three principles: performance, trust, with a single point of contact throughout the project, and quality, through rigorous process control. The team brings together master sailmakers, riggers, electronics specialists, upholsterers and yard technicians.

Sailmaking is central: Axe Sail is the official Quantum Sails representative for the north-west coast and supports the design, manufacture and optimisation of sails. The range covers cruising sails, reliable and easy to handle for coastal or offshore passages, high-performance racing sails, One Design sails compliant with one-design class rules, and an offshore racing range. The three sail lofts in Cherbourg, Granville and Saint-Malo provide local follow-up, from project analysis to final tuning on board, with a dedicated area for adjustments, repairs and technical monitoring of sails.

The boatyard covers refit and composite work, marine electronics, winter storage and hard standing. The Cherbourg site has a 500 sqm workshop, two covered bays for boats up to 14 metres, hydraulic cradles from 8 to 16 tonnes and a 2,300 sqm hard standing area. The rigging workshop works on standing rigging (shrouds, forestays, removable stays) and running rigging (sheets, halyards, tackles), replacing tension fittings. An 18-metre swaging bench allows cables from 3 to 12 mm to be made on site, and a specialist rope worker operates indoors on masts up to 20 metres. Axe Sail is the official representative for MARLOW technical ropes.

Upholstery completes the offer with interior and exterior work, lazy bags, sprayhoods, biminis, covers, mattresses and fabrics, both new builds and renovations. The company is also a dealer for J Composites sailboats (J/7, J/70, J/99, J/36, J/40, J/45) and Dufour Yachts (37 to 54), and offers brokerage of used boats and used sails.
