Butchdesign describes its work as naval architecture and engineering applied to solving technical problems, from re-rigging a wooden-sparred gaff rigged barquentine to investigating the causes of a buckled tank side. The office recommends being consulted before shipyards are asked to quote, so that they can price on the basis of proper drawings and specifications. It states a long history of working with the MCA, class and flag authorities on statutory matters. The team is led by Aurélien Le Bas, an engineer specialising in composite materials who worked on carbon mast manufacturing and on racing yachts including the Volvo entries Amer Sports I and II and the Swedish America's Cup yacht Orm, who joined Butchdesign in 2002 and became managing director in 2010, and by Butch Dalrymple-Smith, formerly head of the technical side of Ron Holland's design office for seventeen years, then project manager at Lürssen and chief designer at Camper & Nicholsons. The office is located at the La Ciotat shipyards, and states that it travels to projects worldwide.
