History

The Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria was founded in 1908 "by a group of Gran Canaria patricians", with the aim of promoting all water sports and tourism on the island. Its first president and founder was Gustavo J. Navarro Nieto. The club was first based in the port basin, then moved in the 1960s, during the reorganisation of the port, to the site south of the Naval Arsenal where its headquarters stand today. Alfonso XIII, who granted it his patronage, and later Juan Carlos I have served as its honorary presidents. The club now covers about 45,000 m² in the heart of the port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with a 135-berth in-water marina and a dry marina for more than 150 dinghies. It hosted the 1965 Snipe World Championship, after which dinghy sailing took off at the club. The club describes itself as the most successful light-sailing sports organisation in the world, with seven Olympic gold medals among its sailors according to the Asociación Española de Clubes Náuticos and the City of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria's listing (the English Wikipedia page gives five as of the end of 2015).
