History
The Societe Nautique de Marseille was founded on 12 February 1887 by a group of racers from the Societe des Regates Marseillaises, itself established in 1862: it is today the oldest continuously active yacht club in France. Based on quai de Rive Neuve in the Vieux-Port, it held its first regatta in March 1887 and has hosted international fixtures ever since: the Star class European Championship in 1936, the Mediterranean International Sailing Week in 1966, the One Ton Cup three times (1976, 1994, 2000), and world championships for the Mumm (1997) and 8 Metre JI (2001) classes. Since 2009 it has also run the Calanques Classique, a regatta dedicated to traditional sailing vessels that keeps Marseille's nautical heritage alive.
