National sailing body of Trinidad and Tobago, incorporated as a non-profit sporting body by Act of Parliament in 1975 (successor to the Trinidad Yacht Racing Association, founded in 1950), headquartered in Chaguaramas since 1972. Runs an annual 14 to 16 race season and the Angostura Tobago Sail Week in Tobago, alongside a youth and adult sailing school (TTYA Sailing Academy).

History

Organized sailing in Trinidad and Tobago dates back to 1950, with the creation of the Trinidad Yacht Racing Association, which oversaw racing at the San Fernando and Point-a-Pierre clubs. The organization became the Trinidad Yachting Association in 1964, before Parliament incorporated it as a non-profit sporting body on 2 October 1975 (Act No. 44) under its current name, the Trinidad and Tobago Yachting Association. Its three statutory objectives are to promote amateur sailing, organize local and regional racing, and prepare for international competition. The association moved to Chaguaramas in 1972, where it has since built up full facilities: a 15-ton travel lift and haul-out yard, bow/stern moorings, a dinghy dock, and a clubhouse with a bar, pool, restaurant and library. From 1975, a sailing school ran with Canadian instructors for eight-week summer sessions, later expanded to Tobago and Point-a-Pierre: the TTYA Sailing Academy still trains youth and adults year-round today. On the racing side, the association runs an annual season of 14 to 16 races (memorial races and sponsor-backed race days) during the dry season, plus an annual Tobago event that has changed name several times along with its sponsorships: Tobago Race Week (1982-1987), then Angostura Race Week (1988-1993) after an initial sponsorship deal, then the Angostura Yachting World Regatta (1994) following a partnership with the British magazine Yachting World, known today as Angostura Tobago Sail Week.
