History

The Yacht Club de Monaco was founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier III. His son, Prince Albert II, has presided over it since 1984, steering a stated policy of reconciling prestige yachting with environmental responsibility (the La Belle Classe label, created in 2005, recognising exemplary vessels and practices). The club counts over 2,500 members from 82 nationalities, a reach rarely matched by any yacht club. Its current clubhouse on Quai Louis II, designed by architect Norman Foster, opened in 2014: a liner-shaped building that also houses the Societe Nautique, the club's rowing section. The YCM owns and maintains Tuiga, a 1909 classic yacht acquired in 1995, the flagship of its classic fleet. It runs several fixtures of the world sailing calendar each year: Monaco Classic Week (classic yachts, biennial), the Primo Cup - UBS Trophy, the Palermo-Monte-Carlo race, and the Monaco Optimist Team Race for young sailors.
