House of Angostura, tracing the Caribbean's most secretive bitters

In Laventille, the House of Angostura opens its historic distillery and its striking butterfly collection, in a more intimate format than the standard visit.

Founded in 1824 by German physician Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, the house moved to Port of Spain in 1876, according to the brand's own site. The small-group "Premium Angostura Experience" grants access to the historic stills and the "Bitters Room", described by the house as the only place in the world where its aromatic bitters is made, plus the Barcant butterfly collection. According to Difford's Guide, the oversized label, now the brand's trademark, arose from a disagreement between the founder's two sons while preparing for a late-19th-century international exhibition, never corrected since a judge praised it as effective packaging.
