Private fishing aboard the SUMO, departing Marsden Cove

Berthed at C9 on the Marsden Cove Marina docks, the SUMO is the boat of Bream Bay Charters, run by Stephen Martinovich, known as Sumo Steve, who has been running fishing charters in the bay for more than thirty one seasons. He built the company's first boat, the CARA J, with his own hands in his workshop at Ruakaka Beach, before replacing it in 2017 with the current SUMO, a fully equipped 14 metre vessel for big game fishing (marlin, tuna, shark from January to May) and bottom fishing (snapper, kingfish, mahi mahi), with cabin space for six guests on multi day trips. Trips are booked as a fully private charter directly with the skipper, by phone or text, without going through an online booking platform.
