On the heights of Matauri Bay, the Kauri Cliffs course occupies a vast private working farm, between wooded valleys and cliffs dropping more than fifty metres to the Pacific, facing the Cavalli Islands. Opened in 1999 by American financier Julian Robertson and his wife Josie, designed by David Harmon, a former collaborator of Jack Nicklaus, the course entered the world's top 100 ranking as early as 2003, a milestone the club itself credits with helping launch high end destination golf in New Zealand. The course remains primarily reserved for guests of the adjoining lodge; a round for an outside group is booked directly with the club rather than through a general ticketing platform. Given the distance from the area's usual stopovers, about three quarters of an hour's drive from Opua, this experience suits a full day ashore.
