A short walk from Westhaven Marina, the Northern Club has occupied the former Royal Hotel on Princes Street since 1869, built in 1867 by architect Edward Mahoney on the very first section sold at Auckland's founding 1841 land sale. A private club founded that same year by 120 members, including future Prime Minister Julius Vogel, it remains reserved today for members and their guests, with no public access or ticketing. The building, a Heritage New Zealand Category 1 listing, is entirely covered in Virginia creeper planted in 1927, now one of the visual landmarks of downtown Auckland. The club hosts outside groups for private dinners, wine tastings, or receptions, booked directly with its events team rather than through a ticketing platform.
