Good to know
The Indian Ocean brings together very different wind regimes: a north-east monsoon in the Maldives, trade winds in the south-west of the ocean, and inter-monsoon periods in the Seychelles. Sailing therefore follows each archipelago's own calendar rather than a single season, with one constraint common to the south-west of the ocean: the cyclone season, roughly November to April.
- In the Maldives, the dry season runs roughly from December to April, under the north-east monsoon.
- In the south-west Indian Ocean (Mauritius, Réunion, Madagascar), the cyclone season runs roughly from November to April.
- Ports of call here are remote islands and archipelagos: supplies and technical services are more concentrated than in the Mediterranean.

FAQ
What is the best time to sail the Indian Ocean?
It depends on the area: December to April in the Maldives, rather May to October in the south-west Indian Ocean, outside the cyclone season.
Is the Indian Ocean a single cruising area?
No: wind regimes and seasons vary greatly from one archipelago to another, so planning is done destination by destination.
