Founded by a handful of Bangkok residents who answered a small classified ad in the Bangkok Post in 1957, the Royal Varuna Yacht Club received the Royal Patronage of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1965 and became Thailand's first international sailing centre. Set on a beach at Pratamnak, between Pattaya and Jomtien, it has hosted dinghy world championships (Optimist, Fireball, OK Dinghy, Dart) for decades and remains a major sponsor of the Phuket King's Cup Regatta.

History

The Royal Varuna Yacht Club's story begins with a classified ad: in April 1957, Walter Meyer placed a notice in the Bangkok Post inviting Bangkok-based expatriates and Thai nationals interested in sailing to meet at the Cosmopolitan restaurant. Five founders answered the call, including Prince Bhisatej Rajani, an Australian, an Italian and two Swiss nationals. The "Varuna Marine Club" officially opened on the weekend of 15-16 February 1958, on an isolated beach near Pattaya. In March 1965, during a royal race held at Hua Hin, King Bhumibol Adulyadej himself a regional-level dinghy helmsman granted his patronage to the club. On 26 April 1965, the association officially became the "Royal Varuna Yacht Club". A major official inauguration followed on 14 September 1968, attended by the King, the Queen, the Crown Prince and the Princesses. The club has since established itself as Thailand's first international sailing centre, repeatedly serving as a principal sponsor of the Phuket King's Cup Regatta and hosting a string of dinghy world championships on its Pratamnak beach: Optimist Worlds, Fireball Worlds (three times), Topcat Worlds, International OK Dinghy Worlds and Dart Worlds. Its next major event, the OK Dinghy World Championship, is scheduled for 19-26 February 2027. A new clubhouse was inaugurated in 2003, with a restaurant, bar and swimming pool, while the club continues to run regular international regattas (Brazilian Cup, German Cup) alongside its own sailing school.
