Ch. Courrieu, the master pipe maker's workshop in Cogolin

A Cogolin family house shaping briar pipes since 1802, holder of the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label, with a guided tour of the workshop.

The Courrieu house has been making pipes in Cogolin since 1802, handed down through the same family. The raw material, briar root, is selected by the master pipe maker in the neighbouring Maures massif. The company holds the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label, a French state distinction attached to rare artisanal know-how.

The factory is shown in small groups, guided, from the choice of the raw block through sanding and finishing. It suits a short trip ashore from the gulf: Cogolin sits at the head of the bay, reached by land in minutes from Saint-Tropez or Port Grimaud. The interest is twofold, technical and documentary, since the workshop preserves the tooling and the gestures of a Provencal industry now reduced to a handful of houses. The work continues through the year, outside the tourist rhythm.
